Current Situation:

  • A developing storm system in the southern U.S. is moving northeast, expected to reach New England by Sunday evening and cross New Brunswick early Monday.
  • This is a large system with widespread precipitation extending well beyond the storm center.

Expected Precipitation Progression:

  • Sunday Morning: Snow begins in western Nova Scotia.
  • Sunday Afternoon & Evening: Snow spreads across the province.
  • Early Evening (Cape Breton): Snow begins, while western NS transitions to ice pellets or freezing rain.
  • Sunday Night into Monday Morning:
    • Snow → Ice Pellets → Freezing Rain → Rain moves across the province.

                               

    • Heavier precipitation than the last storm, with intense periods of all types.
    • Expected accumulations:
      • Snow: 10–15 cm
      • Ice Pellets: 10–20 mm (water equivalent)

                                         

      • Freezing Rain: 10–20 mm (some areas will have significant ice buildup).
    • Temperatures will rise above freezing Monday, but some areas will have a thick ice coating before the warm-up.

Wind Conditions:

  • Sunday into Monday:
    • Gusty east to southeast winds as the storm nears.
  • Monday into Tuesday:
    • Winds shift to west/southwest and become strong, possibly requiring warnings.

Looking Ahead:

  • Patchy freezing precipitation may linger in eastern NS early Monday.
  • West and central areas: Light rain showers will change back to flurries as colder air returns.
  • A weather briefing update will be issued on Sunday.

  • Utility outages
  • Dangerous driving conditions and travel disruptions
  • Tree damage
  • Closures and other cancellations

Non-perishable snacks

Water bottles (kept from freezing)

First aid kit

Road flares or reflective triangles
