Nova Scotia Prepares for 2025 Wildfire Season
ANNAPOLIS COUNTY, MARCH 15, 2025 — As the 2025 wildfire season begins this Saturday, March 15th, officials are urging all residents to be cautious and take action to prevent wildfires from spreading across the province.
Brian Orde, Annapolis Regional Emergency Management Organization (REMO) Coordinator, stressed the importance of being prepared, noting that the wildfire season in Nova Scotia runs from March 15th to October 15th. “This is the time to stay alert and manage fire risks to keep our communities safe.”
In 2024, Nova Scotia saw 83 wildfires, including five in Annapolis County, which burned around 47.5 hectares of land.
“By staying aware and following safety guidelines, we can reduce the chance of wildfires and protect our homes and communities,” Orde said. “Everyone has a role in keeping Nova Scotia safe, especially during this high-risk season.”
The province’s Check Before You Burn program offers daily updates on burn restrictions, available at novascotia.ca/burnsafe or by calling 1-855-564-2876. Remember, from March 15th - October 15th, burning is prohibited between 8:00 AM and 2:00 PM every day, and fines may be imposed for burning outside of regulated times.
Orde reminded residents that fire prevention is everyone’s responsibility. “If you live near wooded areas, now is the time to protect your property,” he said. Homeowners can find simple tips for making their homes and property FireSmart on the FireSmart Nova Scotia website and Facebook page, including steps like clearing away dead leaves and branches, trimming trees and shrubs, and using fire-resistant materials around their homes to help slow the spread of fire.
If you spot a wildfire, call 9-1-1 immediately. For illegal burns that are not wildfires, contact the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables at 1-800-565-2224.
“With wildfire season now underway, we urge everyone to follow local regulations, observe burn restrictions, and take all precautions to prevent fire-related disasters,” Orde added. “By staying vigilant and working together, we can help protect our communities, homes, and natural landscapes.”
